486DX Machines Serve as Linux Firewalls
By C. Rogers, 09.00

Since Linux arrived on the market last decade, its performance worked well across a multitude of platforms. It was rather suprising, but older machines with the Intel 486 CPU fared rather well on the Linux platform, breathing life into the literal dinosaur of the early 90's.

The 486 machine can now be used in another fashion-- serving as a home Linux firewall/router. This may sound like another unsuprising role for the 486, however, this firewall can be done with a floppy disk alone, and with no hard drive installed on the system!

This ideal solution is available through the "Linux Router Project" (http://www.linuxrouter.org), whose website shows step-by-step instructions for setting up this firewall/router.

This solution has gotten a big thumbs up from the Linux community. As the entire firewall software is located on a diskette, it is virtually inpenetratable if the write-protection tab has been locked in. Even better, in the rare instance the firewall is broken into, all one needs to do is simply reboot the machine! For those of us with home networks and Linux boxes, this is surely a must have if security is top priority.

The only requirements for the firewall/router are the following; a 486 CPU, 12 MB RAM, 2 NICs, a floppy drive, and a hub.
