IBM Releases Deskstar 75GXP

By C. Rogers, 04.00

It was just a few years ago that a 1 GB hard drive had more than enough space...

Through the years, however, office applications, operating systems, and digital media got richer in content-- making hard disk space requirements a lot more demanding. Over the past year, we have seen technological improvements as HDD manufacturers squeezed more data per platter; therefore producing 15, 20, and 30 GB hard disks for the PC market.

However, on March 15th, a new standard was delivered as IBM introduced its Deskstar 75GXP.

This new hard disk has the capacity to hold 75 gigs worth of data. This is nearly twice the capacity of top-end drives released just one month ago. In order to get this mammoth-sized hard drive to the public, IBM had to replace aluminum platters with glass counterparts. These new platters should help IBM create even larger drives in the future. Even though the drive sizes are gargantuan, the 7200 RPM standard is still retained with the drives. Also, these HDDs can only run on an ATA-66 transfer rate. This shouldn't be a problem to most consumers these days, as most motherboards produced in the last year support this standard.
