Athlon Gets Bumped to 1.33 GHz
By C. Rogers, 04.01

The Thunderbird core has once again received another speed ramp. AMD has announced the 1.3 GHz and 1.33 GHz Athlons, thus offering a marginal performance increase over the former flagship running at 1.2 GHz.

The reason AMD announced both 1.3 and 1.33 GHz chips is simple; one to cater to users with a 100 MHz DDR bus (13x100 MHz), and the other for users with the AMD760 & KT266 logic motherboards (10x133 MHz).

Pricing at introduction shows a 1.33 GHz Athlon at $350 in volumes of 1000, and likewise $318 for the 1.3 GHz chip.

In a noticeable margin, Thunderbird CPUs can outperform the Pentium 4 at lower clock speeds. While the P4 holds a huge victory in performance with Quake III Arena, the Athlon does better in the majority of business benchmarks and other popular games.
