1.2 GHz Thunderbird has Arrived
By C. Rogers, 11.00

At this given moment, AMD is celebrating the undisputed crown of "speed king" in the CPU world. Their fastest CPU debuted in October, and has opened the Silicon Valley giant to a 200 MHz lead over main competitor Intel.

This processor smokes all competition in every aspect, including Intel's once elusive mainstay in the 3D gaming department. (However, in all likeliness, if a stable 1.13 GHz Pentium III were released at present time, the tide would probably shift towards Intel. Currently, the fastest available CPU by Chipzilla is the 1 GHz PIII).

The mere fact that AMD has the lead in the "number" game has actually helped garner more support of simple-minded computer users, who ultimately think higher clock speed numbers will drastically improve performance. Unfortunately, this is not true, as speed is also determined by the mainboard chipset, graphics card rendering, and other particular hardware.

However, improvements by Via's KT133 chipset will better assist the 1.2 GHz chip, as better support is now available for the northbridge and southbridge chipsets. With the future implementation DDR support on AMD-based motherboards this Christmas, the world of the Athlon is going to get more exciting and open up competition that much further for the upcoming Pentium 4.
