ATI Radeon LE: GeForce2 Quality for $85 By C. Rogers, 04.01
The Radeon LE is a lite $85 derivative of the Radeon DDR board. Offering competitive performance in Quake III, Unreal Tournament, and Mercedes Benz Truck Racing, the LE card can still near-equal the performance of its DDR brother with a registry hack. What differs the Radeon LE from the Radeon DDR card is the support for HyperZ technology-- an implementation designed to improve performance without creating new pipelines or higher clock speeds. With this feature enabled, frame rates can improve on most video games. Using a simple registry hack, one can enable HyperZ technology through Regedit. With this tweak in place, performance between the Radeon LE and DDR cards are only within a few points of each other. And with the GeForce 2 MX cards having a hard time keeping up with Radeon-class cards in 32-bit gaming, one would be hard pressed to find a better value performance-wise than a Radeon LE graphics board. |
