Athlon MP Processors Arrive By C. Rogers, 07.01 (Edited 05.05) With the AMD-760 chipset now being released, the world's second-largest CPU manufacturer has created a new processor line for the professional workstation and server market. The Athlon MP processor officially supports dual-processor setups, however comes with a noticeable price premium over equally-clocked Athlon chips (in most cases over $100). AMD took wraps off with the Athlon MP processor at clock speeds of 1000 and 1200 MHz. Existing "Thunderbird" Athlons can be used on 760MP motherboards, however the new MP chips run on the "Palomino" core, which is more effective at dissipating heat. This is a major concern when building a server system, as temperature monitoring plays a big part in overall stability. Since the Athlon MP chip has been announced, the Athlon core now runs in all corners of the PC market. The Duron processor will work for value-conscious business and home users, the Athlon processor will be for mainstream users, and the Athlon MP now caters to high-end servers.
