Athlon XP 1900+ Leading Benchmarks By C. Rogers, 12.01 There is no arguing that the Athlon XP is the best processor for the dollar. Not only do Athlon XPs swamp Pentium 4 chips in the majority of benchmarks (save Quake III Arena)-- the notion to take the performance crown with lower clock-speeds has proven this CPU architecture to be the most superior available in x86 computing. AMD's latest offering is the Athlon XP 1900+, which runs at a frequency of 1.6 GHz. Utilizing the same 133 MHz DDR bus and 0.18 micron process as past Athlon models, the latest and greatest chip is only a 0.5 clock-multiplier increase over the XP 1800+ (which runs at 1.53 GHz). The secondary cache is still 256 KB in size, and the L1 cache remains at 128 KB. The price of the Athlon XP 1900+ runs for $240. When compared to the $397 Pentium 4 at 2.0 GHz, AMD's better performing processor also rakes $157 in savings. While the Palomino core has helped lower the overall temperature of the CPU core, the Athlon XP still runs very hot. Improperly placing the CPU fan can cause instantaneous death to the chip, rendering the socket-462 counterpart useless. It is strongly recommended to use a copper-based heatsink and thermal grease when using AMD CPUs. |
