Celeron Officially Receives 100 MHz FSB
By C. Rogers, 02.01

Intel's value processor, the Celeron, has been using the age-old 66 MHz front side bus since the introduction of its 266 MHz CPU in 1997. In today's world, a 66 MHz bus is a bottleneck for which data is processed-- this facts holds true when comparing a Celeron of similar clock speed to a Pentium III.

However, the value PC market does not make its decisions for PC distribution basedon system performance-- all these corporate suits care for is is a CPU with an attractive "MHz number", and a sub $1000 price tag. In return for this, PCs get crippled with integrated audio and video platforms.

However, for those interested in a second system, Intel has finally raised the FSB on the Celeron CPU. The new 800 MHz chip now supports this standard. This new bus will open up the bottleneck which the "66 MHz" CPUs were generally accustomed to. For basic applications such as MS Word or Excel, the new FSB will not see any performance gains. However, in the PC gaming arena, an user will be able to get more fluid playback of video, and squeeze out a few more frame rates.

At press time, the official price for the 800 MHz Celeron is ~$200. If building a new system in the future, you could buy an equivalently clocked Pentium III, and have at least a 7-10% performance gain for the same amount of money.
