Corel Linux... Are You Forcing Us to Buy?
By C. Rogers, 07.00

The great thing about the Linux community is the adoption of "free software distribution". Under GNU licensing, the Linux OS cannot be sold. However, in the past few years, large companies have gotten around this agreement buy "selling" Linux handbooks for $50, and "including" the Linux OS at no extra charge. (Oh, how convenient...)

As a rule, these large companies are also supposed to include free distributions of Linux over the web. Enter Corel.

We here at CALROG.COM are very anxious to get a copy of the Corel Linux OS on our workstations, however we recently ran into a speed bump. We downloaded an ISO image of Corel Linux in the middle of June. Upon completion of the 270 MB download, we took the CD image, and burned it to CD media. Our next directions were to create a boot disk. This was done, and immediately the PC was rebooted (to begin the installation process).

What a coincidence... The program freezes during boot-up. A splash screen loaded showing Corel Linux setup, which was pretty exciting to see. However, the wheels on my PC would halt, as the setup would ultimately cause the CD to hang.

Normally, we here at CALROG.COM would think something was wrong with the CD copy, or maybe the system. This is not the case. The installation was done on two other test systems. There was no such luck, as both systems "hanged".

It would be simple to think the CD copy was then hosed. However, head writer C. Rogers had a coworker with the same experience with the download version of Corel Linux. Which makes us think, is Corel doing something on purpose? Do they desparately want us to plug down $50 for their software (oh, we're sorry... The manuals, and the included CD).

Interesting thought...
