Corel Linux Winning Over the Unix Community

In today's computing world, there is one cold truth: oversaturation
of Linux platforms. Today you can go to the local computer store
and see multitudes of branded Linux OSes. There's Red Hat 6.0, Caldera Open Linux, TurboLinux, SuSE, and now there is Corel Linux.

Corel you say? Aren't they the manufacturers of the popular WordPerfect suite? Yes, they are. Corel noticed over the past year that their WordPerfect software was the most popular office suite in the Linux world. And with the Linux community just slightly over 12,000,000 users worldwide, it's a new frontier (and income) for the company that used to cater primarily to the Win9X platform.

So what makes Corel Linux different from the other flavors of Linux? In reality, not much really. It just has a much more souped up KDE, easier to understand interface, and is a descendant of Debian Linux. Other than that, it retains the basic properties for X-Window (like any other Unix-oriented GUI). Other software bundles like Netscape Navigator, Gimp, Linuxconf and other goodies will come standard with the operating system.

One interesting tidbit concerning Corel Linux is the incorporation of WINE. This program enables Corel to run Windows-based applications on the Linux desktop. Not only is this a big milestone for the Unix community, but it also brings many well founded programs to the Linux community-- without all the wait for Linux-version developments. Hell, maybe in the future we might be able to sabotage those mutants on Half-Life on our Linux system... Ahh, a man can only dream (for now, at least).

Corel Linux can be bought in either Standard Version or Deluxe Version at retailers. Prices are $59.95 and $89.95, respectively. However, if you want to advantage of a free download, a copy is available at http://linux.corel.com. Only drawbacks to this option are the 325 MB file size and the fact it's an ISO image. But for those with ISDN/broadband connections and a CD burner, it may be the way to go.
