Corel Sold to Microsoft Corp.

Microsoft is well known for their cutthroat practices-- a statement which has become ever more apparent within the last 10 years. The public has in the past seen Microsoft buy companies such as Hotmail, and also acquire large amounts of stock in their "pseudo-competitior" Apple. Recently, another company has been added to the list; the Canadian company formerly known as Corel.

Corel, whom over the years redeveloped the WordPerfect office suite and released their own "branded" version of Linux, had financial issues this year. This was just one of the worries however, as their CEO/founder, Michael Cowpland resigned in mid-August.

As Corel went down the spiral, Microsoft took notice and "saved" the company through investment. In all reality, the downfall of Corel will certainly help Microsoft procure a more monopolistic hold in the office suite market. Office 10 looks like it will face no formidable opposition upon release; it is highly unlikely Microsoft will continue the WordPerfect production.

What may be interesting is Microsoft's stance on Corel Linux. As this product was also acquired, does this mean there will be MS support for Linux in the coming future?

Only time will tell on this one...
