Dell Abandons Linux on Desktop Models By C. Rogers, 08.01 (Edited 05/05) Most corporate customers use Linux or Unix for high-end workstations or servers. In America, money is all that counts for mega-corporations. As a result, Dell has decided to abandon Linux on desktop PCs and concentrate solely on this in the higher-end market. This is a definite cost-cutting measure. For home users, this news will likely go unheard. Any home-PC enthusiast with a bit of knowledge would likely never buy an OEM PC to begin with, and new PC users don't even know what Linux is. Despite this "business" decision, the Linux community shouldn't shed a tear anyhow. With multiple distributions of Linux available, an enthusiast can easily download a copy for free. |
