Sony Mavica CD200; the Digital Experience By C. Rogers, 07.01 Photography has always been a pastime in American culture, since introduction. Film has been the canvas in which pictures were displayed, and was and still is the de-facto standard. To this very day, most photo enthusiasts still prefer film over the digital camera. However, for casual users with a flavor for technology, Sony has an ideal camera for image and motion capture. As the model name implies, the Sony Mavica CD200 is a CD-based camera. Images are stored on an 8 cm disc, which holds roughly 156 MB of data. With this raw amount in size, hundreds of pictures can be snapped, starting at the entry-level 640x480 resolution, scaling up to 1600x1200! No additional memory sticks are required. The stored images get written to the blank CD-R/CD-RW media, and after "finalizing" the disc (a process which makes the disc PC-compatible), all captured moments can be shared on virtually any PC. Images are stored in JPG format, and videos are stored using MPEG-authoring. The camera comes with a built-in microphone and LCD screen. Flash is also included, for the moments when the environment is a little dark. A surprisingly clear image can be found even when snapping a picture of something in pitch-darkness. With all the neat bells and whistles this camera offers, it is easily justifiable with the price tag of $799. |
