DSL Needs to Reach the Masses
By C. Rogers, 12.01

According to most telco companies in the U.S.,  DSL is virtually available in all major metropolitan areas.  In major cities alone such as New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago, DSL is available in most pockets of town.  Anyone in these areas with the pocketbook for a $50 per month Internet bill can get this sort of service, at will.

While major cities are a shoe-in for DSL service, suburban areas are typically a toss-up for broadband availability.  Depending on the population density, average income per household, and distance from the C.O. (Central Office), the availability of DSL is not made available to everyone.  This is a sad truth for many suburban customers wanting this service-- in the meantime, most have suffered with a 56K connection by default.

In addition, rural customers are abandoned from the hope of DSL connectivity.  Telco companies ignore these areas, as population density is sparse, and wouldn't be profitable.  This is a smart decision business-wise, but for the state of America and its technologicial advances, it seems the ability to have a fast connection is reserved for a slice of the population.

Instead of money being thrown away on frivolous telco marketing, money should be invested in extending the availability of DSL through existing copper wires. The U.S. is fully aware of the DSL concept, and does need to have lame and unnecessary advertisements for such.  Especially with in today's economy, money should not be thrown into wasteful projects.  With proper research, the limitation of service from within 15,000 feet of a C.O. will be a thing of the past.

The telco companies have proven to hold a monopoly in DSL service.  The public has accepted this.  The public should be "treated" in return with widely available DSL service; every willing North American customer can have the opportunity to have a  fast Internet connection.
