Gateway Strikes Against Low Profits with Layoffs By C. Rogers, 09.01 The end-user PC market has suffered a major shakedown. Earlier this year, Micron announced it would cease operations. Dell has turned in less than impressive results per quarter, as compared to last year. The latest victim of the current recession is Gateway, and unfortunately the answer to their problem lies with massive layoffs. Gateway has fired 25% of its workforce in order to retain a profit margin on Wall Street. This translates to nearly 5,000 workers worldwide. All European and Asian offices are now closed, and the company will focus solely in the American end-user market. Does this signal the demise create a rocky future for Gateway? Any potential to regain European or Asian demand in the future could be indefinitely crippled, as they pulled out early. The American market is plentiful, but with low demand for PCs, Gateway may very well be looking at its foundations crumbling. |
