Nvidia Announces GeForce3 Ti 500 By C. Rogers, 11.01 As if the GeForce3 graphics chip was not powerful enough, Nvidia continues to stay on its 6-month upgrade cycle, and releases a more powerful graphics card. Don't let the name GeForce3 Ti 500 scare you- in reality it is just a minor stepping of the original GeForce3 chipset. The GeForce3 Ti 500 chipset just bumps up the specs of its predecessor, and does not have a whole new slew of features. The core clock frequency has been raised from 200 to 240 MHz. While this is a 20% boost in clock frequency, the speed of the memory has only been increased from ~230 MHz to 250 MHz. With a memory increase of only 8%, expecting a world of difference in performance is not in realistic limits. However, one major victory with the GeForce3 Ti 500 is the selling price. Since produced with cheaper materials, a graphics card suited with this chipset runs for only $349. With the original GeForce3, a PC user was hard-pressed to find a decent variant of this for under $400. Making sure that the GeForce3-series of cards becomes a mainstream solution, Nvidia has provided the market with the GeForce3 Ti 200, which is a dumbed-down version of the Ti 500, naturally. |
