Intel 845 Chipset Now Supports DDR-SDRAM By C. Rogers, 01.02 The Intel 845 chipset has been rock-solid solution for Pentium 4 owners. The stability of this platform rivals the past-generation 440BX boards, in which Pentium II and Pentium III processors took well advantage of. Despite the stability of the 845 board, many PC enthusiasts have shunned this chipset due to its paltry support for PC133 SDRAM. While 850 chipsets with RDRAM are not a popular choice among the masses (due to business politics), the 845 chipset cripples the 3.2 GB/sec bandwidth of the Pentium 4's with older-generation memory supporting 1.06 GB/sec. of bandwidth. Looking at these numbers alone, it doesn't take much to show how the Pentium 4 looses some of its "mainstream performance". Recently announced, the Intel 845-D now supports DDR-SDRAM. The design of the 845 chipset has changed much at all, if any. Intel just made some minor adjustments to allow this form of memory to be addressed. With PC2100 (DDR266) memory, the mainstream market now has a well-performing solution for Pentium 4 processors. There are no price premiums for DDR-based boards like the Intel's 850 chipset with RDRAM, so this may open up an even wider market-share for Intel's 845-D chipset. Intel will officially announce this chipset early this month. The first group to stake their claims to the 845-D chipset will be OEMs, however consumer boards should be widely available within a few months time. |
