Itanium CPU Coming Forth By C. Rogers, 06.01 After a year or so of hype concerning the IA-64 project, Intel will soon officially take wraps off the Itanium processor. This is the first venture by Chipzilla into the 64-bit processor market. The CPU is intended to combat the 64-bit CPUs made famous by both Sun Microsystems and Alpha. The first batch of these CPUs will not run at eye-popping speeds. Running at a mere 800 MHz, the $4000+ CPU will effectively work well in server-based machines, as this is a memory-bandwidth "friendly" chip. Coming with a 2 or 4 MB Level 3 cache, this chip will definitely be in demand for early adopters who need a more complete x86-server solution. While most business will not opt for this batch of Itanium chips, the next generation of the 64-bit chip, code-named McKinley, will debut in the fourth quarter at clock speeds of 1.4, 1.5 and 1.7 GHz. Meanwhile, Intel will not remain in the 64-bit x86 market alone. AMD is planning in the future to release its Hammer CPU, which is a 64-bit chip-- but will have native backwards compatibility for 32-bit applications. |
