Linux 2.4 Kernel to be Incorporated Into Distributions
By C. Rogers, 03.01

Made available in early January, the Linux 2.4 kernel created a whirlwind in the penguin community. Die-hard advocates had many reasons to celebrate-- better memory management, support for USB and FireWire standards, and enhanced support for RAID..

The kernel update is presently available for download, however many Linux users out there are new to the community and need bundled distributions. Unfortunately at this point, there have not been implementations of the 2.4 kernel in popular flavors such as Red Hat, TurboLinux, or Linux Mandrake. These distributions are currently stuck with older versions such as 2.2.

Older kernels are by far not "bad"; they have great stability and features, however the support for standard hardware is not fully taken advantage of. Current Linux distributions are still robust and powerful, however the newest bells and whistles have yet to be added.

Fear no more, fellow "penguins-in-training"... The 2.4 kernel will be implemented into major distributions within a couple months time. As always, those willing to download (and have the bandwidth to support large downloads), the newest distributions will be free to the public. A 500+ megabyte download may not sound pretty, but support for disk-mirroring and support for high-speed peripherals, this will make the short wait worth all the while.
