Kyro II: The New Value in Graphics Performance
By C. Rogers, 05.01

The Kyro II chipset has been a shy performer in the graphics card arena. Not officially released at this point, the Kyro II is looking forward to the "big time" when it finallyarrives.

This newcomer, being distributed through ST Microelectronics, boasts a unique architecture, awesome price/performance ratio, and an eyeball-attractive 64 megabytes of video memory.

What makes the Kyro II chipset unique is a technology called tile-based rendering. In effect, this enhancement saves the graphics card some processing time by not rendering overlaid images during execution of display.

Basically, if one moving image had a circle on top of a square, the ares of the square covered by the circle would never be rendered-- something all other cards on the market do presently.

This TBR technology more than makes up for the 175 MHz memory and core clock speed of the Kyro II-based graphics card. Most mainstream gamers would feel at home with this card, which performs well with all popular 3D titles.

The performance of this card is intended for the value market, but simply blows the GeForce2 MX out of the water in gaming benchmarks.

Guillemot's subsidiary, Hercules, will use this chipset in the upcoming 3D Prophet 4500 graphics card. Coming with a price tag of $149, there looks to be a new price/performance contender in the graphics market.
