AMD Fights Back With 1.1 GHz CPU By C. Rogers, 09.00
Unfortunately, it looks like Intel's 1.13 GHz CPU is a "paper" release, as finding the CPU through popular distributors is nearly impossible. Intel will be only releasing their "fastest" CPU in limited quantities to select companies such as Dell and HP. AMD, however, should have their 1.1 GHz chip available almost immediately, for both manufacturers (OEMs) and end users. This chip is currently shipping in large supply, and will penetrate the market almost immediately. At this point, the Pentium III at 1.13 GHz may have some performance advantages in certain aspects of the PC scope, however the consumer will not be able to experience the performance of the leading CPU, due to the fact it's just not available for purchase... On the otherhand, AMD has a very competitive and performance-effective CPU in respect to the Coppermine (not to mention, their chips become readily available in the market after new speed grades are formally announced)... Competition between the two chip giants will benefit us in the long run, as we will soon be receiving the faster, more advanced processors as the "speed war" starts cranking up. Let's just hope the elusive 1.5 GHz CPUs announced next year by both companies are not "paper releases". |
