Testing Linux Mandrake 7.2
By C. Rogers, 11.00

It's common knowledge that Linux is becoming easier to use as days progress. With the Linux OS gaining ground against Microsoft's Windows, the world of graphical interfaces are becoming more intuitive and "involving" for the casual fan.

While it is best to use the Red Hat Linux 7 as your default Linux OS, Linux Mandrake has a couple tricks in the sleeve for the Linux newbie. The software itself proved to be a gem, in multiple aspects.

The installation of Linux Mandrake 7.2 was simple indeed. During installation, available Ext2 partitions were presented, opting a choice for where to install the software. The actual installation of system files and applications took a mere 7 minutes. Also, towards the end, networking settings only asked a few questions: DNS servers, connection type, etc.

Upon completion and reboot , X Window started nicely-- then by entering the gateway address for network connections, a quick reboot allowed quick access to the Internet via the bundled version of Netscape 4.74, or the native browser, Konquerer.

Other bundled goodies include the "norm": the Gimp graphics application, a generic CD audio program, anf the KDE Media Player. These are only a few of the applications bundled with the OS. The full Linux OS and software installation takes roughly 1.2 GBs; this installation may require a bit of space for those with older machines.

If you have recently entered the Linux realm, and want to leave Microsoft behind in the ashes, Linux Mandrake 7.2 is a good point to start. The software can be found on Mandrake's site at http://www.mandrake.com, and is definitely worth the 650 MB download.
