Linux to Support 64-bit Itanium

By C. Rogers, 03.00

In the ever growing world of Linux, support for all makes of hardware is essential to the platform's exponential rise in success. With that thought in mind, open-source programmers have set out for Linux to support Intel's upcoming Itanium processor.

The Itanium processor is the next generation CPU that uses 64-bit architecture, as opposed to today's standard 32-bit microprocessors. In present time, the majority of software is designed for 32-bit CPUs, therefore deemed useless on a 64-bit chip. Linux advocates, however, have worked on a compiler for programs-- one that would take "32-bit code" and translate it to 64-bit language. While the Itanium is only in prototype stage right now, a select few have the IA-64 in their possession. The "lucky few" are the ones who will make Linux compatible with 64-bit systems when the processor becomes mainstream.
