Linux-Mandrake 8 Open to the Public
By C. Rogers, 06.01

In the past, the world of Linux has been a place for the technical-savvy only.  However, one distribution that has appealed to the mass market in recent history has been Linux Mandrake.  Offering features that make Linux easy to install, Linux Mandrake has become a refuge for eager newcomers.

Linux Mandrake 8 is now available for download.  Now officially implementing XFree86 4.03, the Mozilla browser, and a variety of desktop environments, this release is well worth the 650 MB wait.  As with most Linux distributions, it is recommended to have at least 128 MB memory.  CPU requirements are not as strenuous, but with only 64 MB RAM, performance will bog down as simple tasks will take up precious clock cycles.

If interested in obtaining Linux-Mandrake 8.0, this can be downloaded from their respective website at http://www.linux-mandrake.com.  Stability wise, this OS is far superior to the Win9X kernel, and the functionality is as good as, if not better.

If downloading a CD image of the software, it is necessary to temporarily set the CD-ROM drive as the first boot device under BIOS (in order to begin Linux installation).
