Lindows Name Being Challenged in U.S. Courts By C. Rogers, 03.02 There's no hiding that Windows emulation has been a popular idea for new Linux recruits. The Wine Project has been a successful open-source development since inception. For some, it is difficult to completely abandon Win32-based applications, as Linux applications have a steeper learning curve. Looking to create broader appeal with Windows emulation, the Lindows Corporation is introducing a solution shortly to the market. Lindows is not an OS plug-in, yet an operating system itself. It has the ability to run both Linux and Windows code seamlessly. With press reports being spread like wild-fire on the Internet, Microsoft wants to challenge the Lindows corporation in the court room, for name infringement. MS feels prospective customers can easily confuse Lindows for Windows XP. Some believe Microsoft is trying to stifle competition by taking competitors to the courtroom. A ruling has not yet been decided. Lindows Corporation has gone on the record stating they would change their new OSes name should U.S. courts require this. However, they intend to keep the Lindows name as long as possible. Lindows should be released at the end of this quarter. |
