LinuxWorld Paris Reveals Strength in Business Market
By C. Rogers, 02.02

It was two years ago that Jacques Le Marois, founder of MandrakeSoft, stated that Linux would be an equal market-share holder with Windows in the desktop market by 2005.  Unfortunately, this prediction is showing "dismal" proof, as lack of gaming and office applications have yet to hit the mainstream under the Linux operating system.

One field were Linux has a stronghold is in the server market.  The ability to serve web pages, and provide as FTP server has shown Linux to be a much more stable solution than competing platforms.  However, another possible market for Linux is predicted to to be the corporate desktop arena.

Displayed at LinuxWorld Paris 2002 was EUROLogiciel, a French-based accounting application that will appeal to many European and North American businesses.  With the addition of this software, the combo of EUROLogiciel and Star Office 5.2 should provide a complete office application for burgeoning businesses.

With complete accounting, spreadsheet, and word processing applications all under the same umbrella for Linux distributions, some European governments have taken interest in what could be model for other businesses and companies world-wide.  Most European governments prefer open-source applications, which is why Linux is being embraced in this region.

Some rumors at LinuxWorld Paris is a newer revision of Star Office, version 6.0 will adjust minor bugs in past version software, and take on Windows-based Office applications head-to-head. While this can be regarded as hearsay by most, Sun's software has shown signs of improvement with each revision of software.

Linux is definitely "maturing" as a business solution, from the server-end down to the individual workstation.  As for the consumer desktop market, there are no immediate signs of Windows-based software manufacturers "jumping ship" to make consumer-friendly versions of Linux applications.  This may very well change over time, and hopefully future LinuxWorld shows will shows signs of progress in this field.
