Linux Security-Issue; Problem Didn't Lie With OS
By C. Rogers, 02.01

During the month of January, an Internet worm struck through the Linux community. The Linux OS, well-known for being a secure environment, became a target of exponential disaster. Not to make this worm seem like it was a major issue, however this worm did wriggle around "enough" to gain public attention.

For pro-Microsoft users (these weird types of individuals do exist), this may have came as a bit of comedy: the Unix derivative became susceptible to an attack which has plagued Win32 have become accustomed with.

While some reports may have initially played this off as a Linux OS flaw, this is NOT the case. The worm was caused by a third-party application, which will go unnamed at this point. This software, however, does access the web for file-transfer sessions.

Moreover, this seemed to only affect Red Hat users-- other OSes did not receive as much damage per se as the "big player".

Credit needs to go where credit is due; Linux in factory-state does not have full protection against invasion, especially when coupled with other apps. The moral to this story is simple, however-- Linux is only as smart as the user programming it. One cannot assume everything works well out of the box. Using other applications could increase the risk of invasion into your system. It may help to underastand the OS and software being used completely; this could ultimately halt future worms and virii as they arrive.
