Linux Quietly Celebrates Its 10th Birthday By C. Rogers, 09.01 The introduction of the Linux 2.4 kernel is being hailed as a milestone for some, but one interesting fact with the Linux platform itself lies with age-- it will soon turn 10. Linux, which made its debut in 1991, will be celebrated worldwide by the users and programmers which made this OS possible. Originally designed as an experimental OS by Linus Torvalds, this OS never was dreamt to be where it was today. What has made Linux successful is because of its open source nature. While Microsoft products are proprietary and only offer occasional updates, Linux programmers can release bug fixes as they see fit. It is possible that a programmer can release a fix for a certain bug within a day or two. And through its GNU license, Linux can be downloaded free of charge. Applications can be often bundled or downloaded separately, however the investment in download time always pays off in the long run. Linux has created a worldwide phenomenon in its short life span. It seems only natural to greet this OS with a "happy birthday". |
