CPU Prices as of 06/24/01
Intel chips are too expensive to justify the performance benefits. The Pentium 4 at 1.7 GHz, running at $325, can't even hold a candle in performance to a $169 Athlon 1.4 GHz chip. Intel may brag that the Pentium 4 can address larger amounts of bandwidth, but at this point, bandwidth is not stressed with today's applications. Another interesting note is that the "aging" PIII at 1 GHz sells for a whopping $171, while the much quicker 1.2 GHz Athlon is on the market for $104. |
