Intel chips are too expensive to justify the performance benefits. The Pentium 4 at 2.0 GHz, running at $537, is a very quick and efficient CPU.  However, its performance in certain benchmarks cannot always beat that of an Athlon 1.4 GHz.  The AMD Thunderbird running at 1.4 GHz is the best "bang-for-the-buck" out there, selling for $101.  In the Intel family, the Pentium 4 at 1.8 GHz hits the sweet spot with its $223 price tag.
