Linux Mandrake 8.1 Enters Fold
By C. Rogers, 11.01

Building upon the wildly popular Linux Mandrake 8.0 distribution, Mandrake has upped the ante with their latest release of their Linux OS- Linux Mandrake 8.1.

One of the key features for this release is memory support.  Now able to read and address over 1024 MB (1 GB) of system memory, Linux Mandrake natively can support high-density modules in addition to having SMP support to boot.

There is a slightly newer KDE environment- the version number is 2.2.1.  Included with this version of KDE is KOffice 1.1.  While not as robust as MS Office 2000 or XP, the free bundle is nonetheless an attractive element for the free price tag.

According to Linux Mandrake's site, there is a new Internet browser included called Galeon 0.12.1 which claims to be an "unusual browser for a new kind of browsing experience".

As usual, if an end-user has a high-speed Internet connection, the Linux Mandrake OS is one free download away.  All that is needed is a peppy connection speed (at least ISDN), 500 MB of hard disk space for temprary storage, and CD burning software.
