Micron's PC Business Goes Belly Up
By C. Rogers, 04.01

As one of the biggest OEM manufacturers on the market, Micron served millions of customers over the past few years. While people with PC-knowledge would never build their own system from scratch, entry-level users had an alternative option by having systems built through Micron directly.

Micron, at one point in the late 90s, was the no. 3 manufacturer of PCs in America (behind Dell and Gateway).

However, the year 2001 has proven to be a year of recession-- with "dotcom" websites falling like flies, it is only natural that the PC hardware market would also rattle and subsidize ailing competition.

Micron has fallen victim to the slowing economy. PC sales in present time are stabilizing within normal `boom and bust` cycles. In present time, our International economy is definitely in a stage of bust.

In a nutshell, the exponential growth the OEM market fed off (in years past) has ended.

As Micron is out of the PC manufacturing business, they will now concentrate on system components. One of their flagship products have been their RAM modules, which sell under both the "Micron" and "Crucial Technology" names. This will likely be their center of focus in the years to come.

With Micron gone in the PC business, only 4 major OEMs remain. These companies are HP, Gateway, Dell, and Compaq.
