Gates Steps Down as Microsoft CEO: The Aftermath

By C. Rogers, 02.00

The date was January 13, 2000...

This day will surely go down in history as one of the first memorable landmarks of the 2000s. William H. Gates III, at that given time, stepped down as CEO of Microsoft.

Some believe it was a move of good faith in Gates' part-- allowing a good friend to take the reins of the monolithic company. Speculation says he did it to help the company's chances against a "split" by the federal government. While the motive may never be clear, one fact remains. New blood has been given to the Redmond, Washington giant in the form of Steve Ballmer.

With Ballmer acting as CEO of Microsoft, will he help steer his new company away from bad press and government intervention? Only time will tell. But fact is, Ballmer is not Bill Gates. While Ballmer has been Microsoft's acting president for the last couple years, he does not have the vision, predatory practices, and big pocketbook like Billy boy. But maybe he already attained such knowledge from the former CEO. Who knows?

The aftermath of this situation will be felt over a long period of time. We can't really expect any changes to happen overnight. With Microsoft's inevitable crumble from a technological kingdom to a wretched dinosaur in the years ahead, will it happen under the lead of Steve Ballmer? Or will it be Bill Gates, sooner or later, trying to regain what was formerly his???

Good thing to think about.
