Microsoft's Future Hanging in the Rafters
By C. Rogers, 06.00

At the end of March, the United States Supreme Court recommended the breakup of the Microsoft Corporation into two separate identities: one for the Windows operating system, and the other for "everything else" (including Internet Explorer, Office, MSN, etc.). This landmark decision came as a result of the U.S. vs. Microsoft case, in which many states and companies sued Microsoft for its misconduct of business strategy and predatory tactics.

As Microsoft heard the recommendation of corporate division, they quickly reacted to the issue by proposing alternate solutions to keep the company intact.

These proposed solutions are: allowing OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) to customize the Windows startup screen and "hiding" the Internet Explorer browser on the Windows desktop.

The question is whether the U.S. government will find these solutions acceptable and exterminate its proposal of creating "Baby Bills". Either way the government chooses, the current Microsoft company will change as we know it; meaning a decision will have to be finalized sooner or later.

One may guarantee, however, that a Supreme Court decision for corporate breakup would certainly create a Microsoft rebuttal-- causing an additional case in the appellate courtroom. Indeed, the Supreme Court has quite a few decisions to make in the upcoming weeks; they must think of future consequences for each ruling they make. Microsoft has the funds, and the power to fight the system for as long as they please: the main point being there should be a suitable compromise between the two parties.
