Microsoft Entering Game Arena with `X-Box` Console By C. Rogers, 04.00 Though the release of the X-Box may be a year away, Microsoft has sent shock waves throughout the video-game world with its upcoming product. The giant from Redmond, Washington has expanded its horizon once again, penetrating a lucrative market which it has ignored in the past. The X-Box console will consist of an unnamed Intel CPU, nVidia graphics (AGP), and 3D integrated sound. The X-Box will run on a stripped down version of Windows CE, meaning it will only cater to consumer gaming and not external application use. Game manufacturers from around the world will find X-Box titles easier to create. Since the games themselves are encoded for the Windows kernel, manufacturers can debug malignant errors with ease-- as opposed to tweaking complex software coding with N64 or Playstation counterparts. The X-Box will also sport optional Internet connection tools; these will be used primarily for player-to-player connectivity, and could plausibly serve as a portal for software service packs. With a price tag of roughly $200, the X-Box will create as much competition as it will with innovation. It is destined that all video game giants will be involved in a price war as Microsoft barges its way onto the console scene. The only undecided factor (at this point) is if the public will greet the X-Box with open arms as it has with Nintendo64 or Playstation. |
