Will Napster Stay Around?
By C. Rogers, 09.00

This month will be a pivotal month for all users of digital music on the Internet. Napster, the biggest and most popular MP3 swapping site, will receive its "final" ruling from a San Francisco Appellate court. It's very possible Napster could be shut down, potentially angering a large amount of Internet users.

Although Napster has been with around since the late 90s, it seems like this service has been around us for seemless ages. Thousands of thousands of individuals use Napster everyday, to share their music and tastes with a worldwide variation of individuals. Napster also brought back together the feeling of community, as users seemed to voluntarily offer their music in exchange for other digital libraries.

Napster breeded a new wave of people-- those who are now going to accept peer-to-peer networking as a staple of life. So, in all reality, does it matter if Napster sticks around?

Sure, Napster will be hard to see wither away if the court rules in favor of the RIAA. But the fact is, people shouldn't be sad if this is the case. Pandora's Box has already been opened, as more individuals will utilize other forms of peer-to-peer network applications for file transfer.

One program that may take off is Gnutella. This program not only allows distribution of MP3s, but allows the sharing of any file on a computer, should the owner decide to reveal it. Gnutella shows promise for the future, as well as other clone programs which aid the peer-to-peer networking culture. Over time, P2P software will become more easy for the casual Internet user, and will become almost as common as the telephone in American homes. This will not happen overnight, but this will most certainly happen in an exponential scale.

Whatever happens to Napster, we here at CALROG.COM would like to congratulate Napster for all past efforts. Their time may possibly come to an end, but they will never be forgotten.
