RAM Prices Reach Ridiculous Lows By C. Rogers, 09.01 Back in March of last year, memory prices were relatively expensive. PC 800 RDRAM ran for $1000 for 128 MB modules, bloating the costs of then high-end Pentium III systems into the stratosphere. The "cheaper" solution for the market was PC133 memory, which in its respective size ran around $100. For the end-user, PC133 memory was the only way to go. Nonetheless, the world was in a state of euphoria with economical bounty. One-and-a-half years later, the sluggish world economy has reaped one major benefit to consumers: low memory prices! Today, 256 MB of PC133 memory runs for $16 from certain vendors. The once-hated RDRAM can be purchased in the same size for $76. PC2100 DDR-SDRAM ballparks for $30. How could this happen? The case is simple. Demand for PC components are weaker than ever. Companies are willing to squeeze profit margins to razor-thin levels to move out inventory. This makes right now the best time to go out and purchase memory. For those whom have been looking into increased performance for high-end, server or gaming machines, extra memory can easily benefit in the cases of multi-tasking or video creation. With prices as low as they are now, they are bound to go up once the economy picks up again. Our advice here at CALROG.COM, plan for the future, and stock up on memory while it's still dirt cheap. If if you don't need it now, it'll be a symbolic kick in the face if purchased later with double-digit increases in price! |
