SimCity 3000 Reaches Out for Linux By C. Rogers, 12.01 SimCity has been a widespread favorite in the world of of simulation games. Created in the late 1980s and for DOS and the 286 PC, SimCity became a favorite among all gamers due to the challenge of building and maintaining a city. In 1993, SimCity 2000 became a successful derivative of the original SimCity. The implementation of highways, schools and water lines added to the complexity of building a dream city. In 1997, the SimCity crowd was delighted to the see the implementation of a 3D-based offering. SimCity 3000 built upon SimCity 2000, and offered twice the amount of land for development. Sadly, these software titles were predominantly available to Microsoft OSes-- DOS 6.22 and Windows 9X. Linux users were left in the dark. Loki Games has changed the landscape, however. SimCity 3000 is now available for Linux! Loki ported this game from the Windows version, and is now available for use under X. This is a great achievement for the Linux community, as a challenging, yet resource-intesive game is now available for the beloved OS. For those wanting to try a test download of SimCity 3000 for Linux, this is made available for download at http://www.lokigames.com/products/sc3k/.
