Search Engines To Charge Internet Users?

Ever since the "dot com" bust in the late 1990's, several Internet sites attempted to maintain profitability and infrastructure with web-based advertisements.  However, with Internet users becoming more savvy and callous to advertising efforts, click-through percentages dipped well below the 1% mark as the year 2000 approached.

With the North American population suffering through a recession, many people saved their earnings for uncertain times.  With less interest in purchasing goods, online advertisement attempts have been abysmal, to say the least.

It is being rumored that search engines, one of the most accessed sites on the Internet, may start charging fees for monthly usage.  Yahoo is already toying with the notion of creating a "Premium" service, which would charge Internet users X amount of dollars a month.  Using a service-based business model,  customers would have a renewing fee every month for search engine access.

Not to single out Yahoo as the only engine considering this, it may be possible that Google, Altavista and Lycos may follow suit when deemed necessary.

In order to halt sinking profits, Altavista is dumping its e-mail service in March.  This will save Altavista charges for bandwidth, but as the Internet population doubles over the next several years, a subscription-plan for service could be in the mix.

At this time, no major search engines are charging any service fee for website usage.
