Intel Releases Socket-478 Chips By C. Rogers, 09.01 (Edited 05/05) The Pentium 4's massive size has been ever apparent since its introduction. The die size was twice as large as that of a Pentium III. Many PC-industry analysts have deemed the Pentium 4 core as extremely overpriced, and not priced-tiered for all market segments. Thus, the Pentium 4 had a rough year adjusting to the public. Intel on August 27th finally released new Pentium 4 chips based on the Socket-478 architecture. Using what is called a micro pin grid array, the chip size is half that of a Socket-423 counterpart, yet still manages to squeeze in more pins per millimeter. The decrease in size for the Pentium 4 core will allow cheaper prices for Intel CPUs. Debuting last month at 1.9 and 2.0 GHz, all future processors will exclusively come with the feature . For those whom own a Socket 423 motherboard, and are looking for higher-clock chips, a Socket 478 to Socket 423 converter will surely makes its way to the market. Intel will aggressively market the new Pentium 4 chips, hoping by the end of the year to have their flagship processor in both the high-end and mainstream market. |
