StarOffice Suite to Go Open Source
By C. Rogers, 08.00

On July 19th, Sun Microsystems announced they will be releasing their source code for the popular Linux office suite, StarOffice.

One of the most popular suites on the Linux market, StarOffice over the years has allowed users to create spreadsheets, documents, and published works in a manner similar to that of Windows-based Office 2000. The open-source kick-off for the Linux software will begin with StarOffice 6. (There will also be versions for Solaris, and the Windows platform, however, they're not as "wildly" popular as the Linux distribution).

The open source for StarOffice will be found at http://www.openoffice.org upon release. A mailing list will be available for news on this upcoming project, however an expected release date of StarOffice's code will be on Friday, October 13th of this year.

As the StarOffice software becomes available to the masses, it will improve upon an almost solid product. With the public able to add useful features to the software, StarOffice may gain more share in the application suite market.
