Windows Product Activation; Center of Controversy
By C. Rogers, 08.01

It is understandable that Microsoft wants to combat software piracy.  If done in a reasonable matter, then the end user would oblige, and not think anything about.  But it seems Microsoft has gone a little extreme with their protection scheme, called Windows Product Activation (WPA).

This feature, for lack of a better term, will lock out the OS, unless information on system hardware is exchanged with Microsoft's website for continued full-version access.

May sound like an innocent feature for the computer illiterate, but for those whom build their own system, and switch hardware, this can cause a living hell.

When hardware is changed, an user will have to reactivate Windows XP again.  If multiple hardware is switched at once, activation can be nullified altogether, as MS' servers would believe another machine is being used.

This is why the computer-lifestyle users are fuming about WPA, and will likely not ever upgrade to Windows XP.  This feature alone may force users to stick with Windows 2000 or ME, or jump on the Linux bandwagon.

Bad enough, Windows can only be installed on one personal machine.  Other computers in a household will require extra purchases of Windows, which will run at full-version for $200.

Why Microsoft may be combating piracy, there may be an ulterior motive in this whole scheme of activation.  Is Microsoft trying to combat software piracy in reason, or skew more money our of users with multiple home machines, or a taste for switching in new hardware?
