Year 2001 Predictions By C. Rogers, 01.01 Special Article
Q1 2001: - Intel will release new "Coppermine128" Celerons with a 100 MHz FSB. The new CPUs will introduce first at 800 MHz. - DDR-SDRAM will become widely available through all forms of distribution. PC1600 SDRAM will dwindle away slowly as 133 MHz FSB Athlons become more commonplace. - Microsoft will begin beta-testing for Internet Explorer 6.0 (late in the quarter); more XML features will be implemented with this pre-release. ------------------------------- Q2 2001: - Nvidia will release the successor to the GeForce2 Ultra graphics card. The graphics card will be more powerful, and keep the $400-500 price-tag in place for high-end graphics. - The Duron CPU will win a larger market-share in the budget PC market. "Imitations" of the SiS 730S chipset will arrive, and offer better performance for the dollar. - New domains such as .pro, .shop, etc., will have a larger minority stake in the ".com" world. The .TV domain will crumble and die off, after Internet users find this to be just a "Year 2000 fad". ------------------------------- Q3 2001: - Intel releases the 1.8 GHz Pentium 4. RDRAM prices will drop to price-parity with typical SDRAM (but still sucks in our opinion). - Matrox files for bankruptcy, or sells out to ATI or Nvidia. - Broadband communications will be available to virtually anyone in the U.S. (either DSL, cable, or satellite). ------------------------------- Q4 2001: - Microsoft releases its final beta of Whistler. - Celerons will be above the 1 GHz mark, possibly as high as 1.2 GHz. The Duron will be at 1.66 GHz clock speed (133 MHz DDR) - The format MPEG-4 will be on the sh*tlist of Hollywood executives, as piracy will be rampant at this time period. (With mainstream systems approaching or surpassing the 2 GHz mark, MPEG-4 encoding will be a much "quicker" process). |
